A new type of water soluble thiadiazole derivative was synthesized and its structure was analyzed through infrared spectrum. The tribological properties of thiadiazole derivative as additive in triethanolamine auqeous solution were evaluated with SRV oscillating friction and wear tester. The worn surfaces were observed with surfaces profiler apparatus and scanning electron microscopy. The results of SRV test indicate that the thiadiazole derivative as additive in triethanolamine auqeous solution shows well anti wear and friction reducing properties, which can effectively reduce the fatigue wear.XPS analysis shows that a protective film composed of FeS and FeS2 compounds is formed on the worn surface due to the friction chemical reaction between the additive and the friction pair surface. The additive has excellent inhibition property as copper corrosion inhibitor,it is a promising as a multi functional environmental friendly lubricating additive.
