The surface texture with different area ratio and aperture was fabricated on the friction specimens by using laser micromachining technology.A pair of Helmholtz coils were designed and manufactured,and was placed in modified UMT3 friction tester to produce a uniform gradient magnetic field in which the friction test can be carried out for the friction pairs under a uniform gradient magnetic field.With the magnetic fluid as lubricant,the friction properties of the specimens with different surface texture in uniform gradient magnetic field were studied under different load and moving frequency.The results show that the surface texture with appropriate aperture and density can improve the friction performance of magnetic fluid.The anti wear and extreme pressure performance of friction pairs is improved significantly by the surface texture in a uniform magnetic field gradient.The friction coefficient is reduced significantly with the increase of uniform gradient magnetic field strength.
