In order to study the effect of surface roughness of matching materials on friction and wear properties of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) sealing materials under the condition of dry friction, based on MMW1 vertical universal friction and wear tester, the friction and wear properties of PTFE test ring against 316L stainless steel and 45 steel were studied under different load and speed, and the end face topography of PTFE test ring was observed by a particle shape analyzer. The surface roughness of the steel ring was accurately measured by a stylus profiler, and whose effect on the friction and wear properties of PTFE test ring was analyzed. The results show that under the condition of dry friction, too high or too low surface roughness of the steel ring will lead to a increasing of the wear of PTFE test ring. When the load is constant, the wear loss of PTFE test ring is decreased firstly and then increased with the increasing of the roughness of steel ring, and it is increased with the increasing of rotational speed. When the rotational speed is constant, the friction coefficient of PTFE test ring is firstly decreased slightly and then increased with the increasing of the roughness of steel ring, and it is decreased firstly and then increased with the increasing of load. The furrow action and the cutting action of 316L stainless steel on PTFE test ring are more obvious than that of 45 steel under the same conditions.
