The influence of surface defects of bump and dent on the distribution of the pressure and film thickness for the steady state isothermal EHL of point contacts was numerically investigated, and the effects of defects location and size were discussedNumerical results reveal that a bump or a dent has different influence on the pressure and film thickness in the contact region. The lubrication state becomes bad when a single bump locates in the exit constriction, and the film pressure is high and the contact surface may be destroyed when a single dent is near to the center of the contact region. The lubrication condition in the contact region is greatly affected by the single bump with bigger height and smaller width, and the single dent with bigger height and width.
