Based on nonlinear contact theory,a finite element model for Vossloh rail fastening system was established. The dangerous zone of the clip was found, and the influences of rail lateral displacement and rail pad stiffness on the dangerous zone was investigated. The numerical result was compared with the fracture location of the clip in the field. Results show that a local stress concentration in the clip is occurred at backend arc surface of the clip after the rail fastening clip is installed, and both bending and torsion play a major role. The rail lateral displacement and rail pad stiffness greatly affect the maximum equivalent stress and the clamping force of rail fastening clip.
