Abstract:As to the leak phenomenon commonly happened in the contacting mechanical seal,considering the similarity between the fluid flow in porous media and the seal gap of the mechanical seal end face,the model of the percolation flow between mechanical end faces was established based on the porous media model.By deriving the momentum equation and continuity equation,the governing equation is deduced,which is suitable for describing the fluid flow of mechanical end face.A new analytical solution evaluating the leakage rate of the mechanical end face was introduced.The calculated results were compared with ones obtained by COMSOL.The effect of porosity,roughness,film thickness,seal pressure and spring pressure on leakage performance was analyzed.The results show that the leakage rate is increased with the increase of porosity,roughness,film thickness and the sealing pressure,and deceased with the increase of the spring pressure.The obtained analytical results show the same trend with the numerical results,which verifies that the current analytical method is practical and feasible.
