Abstract:Mechanical seal deterioration is frequently caused by a combination of variables acting together. Only by taking into account the connection between numerous deterioration modes of mechanical seals, i.e., the complete influence of some or all factors in the system on all associated degradation modes, can it be considered engineering practice. This article investigates the welded metal corrugated pipe mechanical seal. Based on the Archard model and the Arrhenius formula, as well as the coupling connection between the corrugated pipe and the end face in mechanical seals, a coupling effect model of wear and loss of elasticity is developed and compared to actual examples. The findings reveal that the prediction model including coupling effects has a lower calculation result of wear than the Archard model; nevertheless, the estimated result of lost ammo is more than the result predicted using the Arrhenius equation. The adoption of this coupling model may significantly increase the accuracy of mechanical seal failure prediction, better explain the reasons of mechanical seal failure in actual production, and give guidance for prolonging the service life of mechanical seal.
