Abstract:Based on the fluid lubrication theory, taking cavitation phenomenon and the heat transfer between fluid film and seal rings into consideration,a threedimensional flowheat coupling model of a wavetiltdam(WTD) mechanical seal was developed.A SUPG finite element method was applied to solve the generalized Reynolds equation, the energy equation and the heat transfer equations, and the pressure of the fluid film, open force, leakage rate and friction coefficient were obtained. The sealing performance between thermohydrodynamic lubrication and hydrodynamic lubrication was compared. The results show that the opening force and leakage rate are increased, while the friction coefficient is decreased with the increasing of rotation speed, pressure, wave amplitude and wave number. The opening force and leakage rate are decreased, while the friction coefficient is increased with the increasing of dam width rate and film thickness. The influence of thermal effect on the sealing performance is significant, with the increasing of friction heat, the film pressure is decreased.
